Read about Simpatico Networks' Expats.com in the International Herald Tribune
LONDON When expats get a craving for comfort food from home, be it Vegemite from Australia, soek from South Africa or Cap'n Crunch cereal from the United States, they can usually turn to a local shop, although often there is a hefty price tag. When the craving is more intangible, when expatriates want to connect with people who share their own culture or with those who are struggling with the same issues, they can also go to a shop. But in this case, the goods are virtual, and in most cases, they are free. A crop of new and retooled Web sites is tapping into the needs of the wired and relatively wealthy expat population. One of them, www.expats.com, aims to be a one-stop shop for people living abroad: one that provides a way of meeting friends, finding romance and making business contacts.
"In one place, you can do dating, social networking, business networking, form private or public clubs, host events, find your friends' friends and connections, post your resume, your blog, your Web links, and find a comprehensive links database of country-by-country resources," said Pamela Meyer, the founder of the site, which went live in February.
Indeed, some of the services go a step further than the traditional bulletin board. For example, the site features classified ads for, say, used cars; and with a click, prospective buyers can see a profile of the person who placed the ad. Meyer spent a year researching the needs of expatriates while developing the site. She said she found that expats - like newcomers to any area, even in their home countries - used to rely heavily on university and women's clubs and similar groups for information. Now, she said, they are increasingly seeking to meet their needs online, and in one place.
